ImageLocal Drama group Compantas Lir begun their drama festival run in the dark last Saturday as a bolt of lightening knocked out the power in Kildare town as the group were in final preparations for the play. Compantas Lir, who hail from the Carnmore/Claregalway region, have been rehearsing John B Keanes' The Year of the Hiker and set off for Kildare on Saturday for the first of seven competitive performances which will take them all over the country and conclude with a three night run in the Town Hall, Galway, from the 3rd of April. The group were asked by the adjudicator Tony Rushford, if they were prepared to perform under the dim emergency lights in the auditorium and director Brid Conneely agreed that the cast were prepared. At 9.10, an hour after the play was due to commence, Compantas Lir took to the stage.

The show went down very well with the audience who brought their seats forward to all but join the cast on stage. Speaking afterwards director Brid Conneely complimented the professionalism of the cast and crew who excelled under the unexpected conditions. Compantas Lir will now travel to Roscommon on Friday in search of more success and hopefully a brighter run through the festival circuit.

Tickets for the Year of the Hiker can be purchased in the Town Hall Box office for the three night run on Thursday April 3rd Friday 4th and Saturday 5th.
