"The Year of the Hiker" isn't a dark play but when lightning struck a local transformer in Kildare, Compántas Lir had to perform the first part in almost darkness, under just emergency lights. The cast and crew had just returned from dinner at around 7pm and were putting the finishing touches to makeup, props and set. Suddenly power went and the emergency battery powered lights came on. Luckily the set was finished so it was only a matter of waiting for full lights to start the play. However by 9pm the lights weren't back and it was decided by the local drama committee, adjudicator and Compántas Lir to proceed. Thankfully the actors were not phased and didn't let the lack of lights affect them. Afterwards the crowd of about 100 spoke of the professionalism of the cast, and of the excellent performance. Some people had left when it was unclear if the show would go on, but all that remained experienced every emotion in the course of the show and had the height of praise for the production. The adjudicator priased the group for having the bravery to continue under the circumstances. He paid special mention to Philip Cribbin who plays The Hiker, saying that John B would have given his blessing on this perfromance. In summing up he also picked out Vincent Moran as Joe, for his great performance. The set came down and after loading the truck, everyone congregated in the CYMS Hall for some refreshments. The local committee looked after the group and had a wonderful hall and festival. Comments (0)
